Material & Finish

A room-by-room guide to balancing a quiet wall finish with the demands of everyday living.

How do you choose a paint finish?

Start with the surface, moisture exposure, and cleaning needs, then choose the look. Matte is a starting point for subdued walls; eggshell adds a soft sheen; satin and semi-gloss make details more reflective. Check the specific coating's intended use rather than relying on its sheen name alone.

Two rooms painted in the same colour can feel quite different when their finishes change. One may read as calm and enveloping; the other brings attention to mouldings and edges. For an elegant interior, treat sheen as part of the design brief alongside colour, lighting, and material.

It also belongs in the practical brief. A rarely used dining room, a busy hallway, and a bathroom do not ask the same things of their walls. Plan the coating around how the room works, then refine the visual effect.

Understand the broad differences

Benjamin Moore's finish guide describes eggshell as more reflective than flat or matte, satin as higher in gloss than eggshell, and semi-gloss as a way to emphasize millwork. These categories describe appearance; product suitability still needs a separate check.

Finish comparison: a starting point for your room specification
Finish Visual direction Question before ordering
Matte Subdued wall treatment Does this exact product suit the room's use?
Eggshell A gentle sheen on walls Is the glow right in your lighting?
Satin / pearl A more reflective effect; names vary by line Which sheen is offered in the specified product?
Semi-gloss Definition on architectural details Is the coating intended for your trim or cabinetry?

Living rooms and bedrooms: decide what should lead

When art, upholstery, and woodwork are the main attractions, consider a wall finish that sits quietly behind them. Compare the look of AURA Interior Matte F522 with AURA Interior Eggshell F524 as part of your product discussion.

Tell the store how often the walls will need attention. A bedroom with little contact is a different brief from a family room where furniture, pets, or children's activities regularly meet the wall. Ask about the exact product's cleaning instructions before making the decision.

Hallways: plan around repeated use

Make a list of the contact points: the entry bench, the stair turn, the wall beside the coat hooks. Discuss those areas with your painter or retailer. You might prefer the same wall appearance throughout an open plan, but that preference should be paired with an appropriate coating specification.

A practical ordering sheet also prevents accidental substitutions. Record the product line and finish, rather than leaving the instruction as "washable white paint."

Bathrooms: select a coating for the environment

A glossy look is not the only option to discuss. Benjamin Moore identifies AURA Bath & Spa as a matte product designed for high-humidity environments. GTA Paint & Decor lists AURA Bath & Spa K532. Confirm the preparation, application, and care directions for your project.

Include the room's existing condition in that discussion. A finish choice alone is not a complete plan for a damp or damaged surface.

Trim and cabinets: specify them separately

Doors, cabinetry, and mouldings deserve their own line on your schedule. For example, the store carries ADVANCE Interior Semi-Gloss K793. Ask whether it fits your surface and existing coating before using it.

Do not confuse "dry to the touch" with ready for recoating or fully cured. Use the exact product label or technical data sheet for timing, preparation, and cleaning directions.

Questions before you paint

Is matte paint always unsuitable for busy rooms?

No. Check the performance and recommended uses of the specific product. A sheen label alone does not settle that decision.

Are satin and pearl identical?

Do not assume they are interchangeable across paint lines. Confirm the available finish in the product you intend to order.

Can I use one paint for every surface?

Do not assume so. Specify walls, ceilings, trim, and cabinets separately, and check the intended use of each coating.
